GB7HU – East Yorkshire Repeater Group

Latest news from the East Yorkshire Repeater Group on GB7HU – their D-Star repeater.

The East Yorkshire Repeater Group (EYRG) is pleased to announce that a new 70cms. D-STAR repeater, GB7HU has been commissioned in East Yorkshire.

The new service is the culmination of several years of planning by their committee, along with a successful grant of £9,466 received from the National Lottery (Big Lottery fund).

The group has also purchased several D-STAR transceivers, a high quality generator for use with emergency communications in East Yorkshire.

The new Repeater GB7HU was switched on by the RSGB DRM for East Yorkshire, Mario Brashill G2DPA. The first contact was made by the NOV holder, Andy Russell G0VRM, with Clive Reynolds G3GJA, and Lyndon Reynolds M0LDR. An official opening ceremony with members present will take place soon.

Many other items have also been purchased by the EYRG for their continued RCF training programme.

Currently work is underway configuring the Gateway PC for GB7HU and providing the vital Internet link to the site.

The Gateway PC is based on a Jetway JNC92-330 dual core Intel Atom mini-itx motherboard, fitted with 2GB of memory and a 640GB Server Grade WD Caviar Black hard drive – this is mounted in a 1U rackmount case from mini-itx.com. The system requires approximately 25W of power – vital when the system is running 24/7 and the electricity bill is paid by user subscriptions!

The PC runs CentOS 5.2 Linux (a variant of RedHat Linux) and is currently being configured so that it can be installed at the groups Weedley Site and remotely administered by the group from the comfort of their own shacks via the Internet using SSH and VNC.

South Yorkshire Open Forum Legacy Fund

DEVELOPING a clearer picture of the Third Sector is on the agenda with a new ground-breaking fund from the South Yorkshire Community Foundation (SYCF).

Any Voluntary, Community or Faith-based organisation based in and operating in South Yorkshire and which is accountable to its membership can apply for the resources from the fund.

The Fund is to be distributed to eligible applicants within South Yorkshire where the grant will make a significant difference.

Which groups or activities will be prioritised for funding?

Higher priority will be given to those applications that can demonstrate how they will address some of the following needs. If your group or activity will not meet these priorities then you can still apply but it is less likely that you will receive funding:

* Groups that respond to their communities’ needs.
* Activities or projects that will support people whose needs can be clearly demonstrated.
* Groups whose main activities focus upon the advancement of education, promotion of good health or the relief of poverty and sickness.
* Groups that work in collaboration with other local community groups.
* Activities or projects that will engage people who face discrimination or disadvantage.
* Activities or projects that will produce a wide range of benefits and provide good value for money.

Priority will be given to applications specifically linked to

The improvement of governance and leadership within the third sector.

Or

Bringing together groups, organisations and/or communities to enhance their voice and capacity to influence.

Organisations can apply for a grant of between £1600 and £7500.

Ham radio and D-Star to get boost from TV sitcom

The ABC Television series, “Last Man Standing” is about Mike Baxter (played by Tim Allen), a marketing executive for “Outdoor Man,” a fictitious sporting goods store in Colorado. Mike, is a “man’s man” and involved in all kinds of outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, boating. Likewise, Mike (and Tim) has a love for all the electronics that go with these activities. Among Mike’s interests is Amateur Radio (Ham Radio). Tim's character (Mike Baxter), is KA0XTT. This is a call sign the show cleared for use on air. "XTT" is a bit of a private joke as Tim's character name on "Home Improvement" was Tim Taylor. So, ex T. T. In the show’s radio inventory is currently an ICOM IC-9100 HF radio, an IC-92AD dual band, hand-held, a Heil PR-781microphone, a Daiwa CN-801HP SWR/Power meter a Comet CAA-500 antenna analyzer and a Iambic CW Paddle.
