D*UGN Meeting Thursday 5th March

D*UGN meet

The D*UGN northern meeting took place this evening at the three horses shoes in Brierley.

We streamed LIVE to the DUGN/ SYRG website and also provided audio from reflector 5a.

Points raised in the meeting.

The group discussed 23cms allocations and the implications of the rollout of microwave D-STAR in YD land and over the Pennines in to Manchester.

barnsley_hospital We also discussed our install of a microwave back haul near Barnsley District General Hospital which will be used as a more stable connection and our internet back haul located in Cudworth will be used for redundancy.

We also discussed a 3G mobile network connection to take over operations in an emergency or outage if both back hauls fail.

Remember the Wombles ?

Today I have been on my travels exercising the old motto “waste not want not”.

I have salvaged some boxes of paper, toner and memory (PC-133 256Mb sticks) not to mention the great runs of cat5 cabling.

New keyboards and mice- unopened! Crazy!

We loaded the Volvo and the dog was none to happy riding on the front seat on two legs, but he’ll survive.

Boxes of brand new equipment all for the taking. It amazes me what a disposable society we have become.

What the group cannot use between us and fellow hams will be sold on ebay and the proceeds put into the group.

Ham radio and D-Star to get boost from TV sitcom

The ABC Television series, “Last Man Standing” is about Mike Baxter (played by Tim Allen), a marketing executive for “Outdoor Man,” a fictitious sporting goods store in Colorado. Mike, is a “man’s man” and involved in all kinds of outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, boating. Likewise, Mike (and Tim) has a love for all the electronics that go with these activities. Among Mike’s interests is Amateur Radio (Ham Radio). Tim's character (Mike Baxter), is KA0XTT. This is a call sign the show cleared for use on air. "XTT" is a bit of a private joke as Tim's character name on "Home Improvement" was Tim Taylor. So, ex T. T. In the show’s radio inventory is currently an ICOM IC-9100 HF radio, an IC-92AD dual band, hand-held, a Heil PR-781microphone, a Daiwa CN-801HP SWR/Power meter a Comet CAA-500 antenna analyzer and a Iambic CW Paddle.
