Cumbria to Access Broadband via Electricity Lines

A USA based telecoms firm by the name of Gridline Communications has teamed up with Electricity Northwest, Cable and Wireless Worldwide and T-Systems (T-S) in the UK to launch a unique pilot of “Broadband over Power Line” (Power Communications) technology in the rural UK village of Shap (Cumbria).

The project will be conducted alongside the installation of Smart Meters (24 Million homes in the UK will be required to have one by 2020) and is similar to one that was announced for Liverpool last year, which uses existing national grid power lines to carry broadband internet access services into homes.

It does this by separating out the electricity and internet service into separate wave lengths.

Gridline claims that its pilot should be completed by the end of June 2011 and success could reap significant rewards. The firm hopes that its project in Shap will lead to a full deployment model, which would reach approximately 2.5 Million Smart Meter equipped homes and businesses on the Electricity Northwest power grid.

Time running-out to work GB50ATG

May and June 2010 see last chance to work GB50ATG.

GB50ATG is the Golden Jubilee station representing the British Amateur Radio Teledata Group, BARTG.

In 1959 the first two UK amateurs to use RTTY on the HF bands, Arthur “Doc” Gee, G2UK and Bill Brennan, G3CQE, formed BARTG.

In those days it was known as the British Amateur Radio Teletype Group, but the name later had to change to Teledata due to a copyright problem. The mode exploded and last year they celebrated their 50^th year, a record which they were very proud to publicise and commemorate with a special award. Unfortunately the two founder members are both SK now but their original efforts are much appreciated by thousands of amateurs.

BARTG now encompasses all data modes and long gone are the nostalgic days of oily machinery, paper spewed out all over the shack and noise, sometimes unbearable after a 24 hour contest. These have been replaced with computer based equipment. However, the distinctive sound of “jingle bells” will never change and is now more popular than ever, and still the most prevalent of the data modes.

For both May and June the station will be operated by Arthur Bard, G1XKZ. Arthur intends to be very active during the last two months so listen out for him on all HF bands. Arthur will try to use both RTTY and PSK for those that would like contacts on both modes.

Special QSL cards will be available and also plaques and certificates for reaching certain targets.

The special call will cease operations on 30th June 2010.

Ham radio and D-Star to get boost from TV sitcom

The ABC Television series, “Last Man Standing” is about Mike Baxter (played by Tim Allen), a marketing executive for “Outdoor Man,” a fictitious sporting goods store in Colorado. Mike, is a “man’s man” and involved in all kinds of outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, boating. Likewise, Mike (and Tim) has a love for all the electronics that go with these activities. Among Mike’s interests is Amateur Radio (Ham Radio). Tim's character (Mike Baxter), is KA0XTT. This is a call sign the show cleared for use on air. "XTT" is a bit of a private joke as Tim's character name on "Home Improvement" was Tim Taylor. So, ex T. T. In the show’s radio inventory is currently an ICOM IC-9100 HF radio, an IC-92AD dual band, hand-held, a Heil PR-781microphone, a Daiwa CN-801HP SWR/Power meter a Comet CAA-500 antenna analyzer and a Iambic CW Paddle.
