GB3YR’s Future as an Analogue Repeater

yrsite

Next month GB3YR has been serving up HAM radio communications for over 16 years from Micklebring in Rotherham as an analogue repeater and internet connected node.

Placed near the M18, YR offers great coverage for the radio user but costs the group over £800 a year to run. This week the bill landed at SYRG’s headquarters for the site rent and associated costs for the next 12 months.

An emergency meeting was called this evening at the Three  Horse Shoes In Brierley to discuss the future of GB3YR.

SYRG reported that over the last three years YR has had little use with no contributions to the upkeep from the local HAM radio community and simply could not continue to run as an analogue repeater and node.

Rather than put the repeater and the site  to rest,  2E0BLF of UKIT togeather with M3VYV of D-STAR Usergroup Northern agreed from the 2nd of November to take on the site and costs of converting YR into a D-STAR regenerative node.

2E0BLF put to the group that DUGN could run it for 12 months on current funds and would secure it for another 24 months after this as part of the DUGN network or as a (PORN) Privately Owned  Repeater Network into 2011  and beyond.

Discussions are still going on with DUGN and SYRG to secure radio comms from Micklebring for the next 3 years as part of a long term strategy to encourage D-STAR digital comms in Yorkshire.

What do you think about GB3YR? Should it stay or go as an analogue repeater?
This is your opportunity to tell the group. Speak now, or forever hold your peace!

Fantastic day at the Penistone Show!

The weather was great and the people that took time out to visit our stand were too! We enjoyed your company – talking and learning about radio..

It was an early 6:30am start meeting up with Lee from LAM Communications to trot up the hill and setup for the crowds that were expected. The show has been running now for 136 years and  lots of people visit.

By 7:30am we’d found our spot and rigged up some cover, tables and a generator. Shortly followed by an array of antennas, some HF radios accompanied by a long random wire tuner and some D-STAR equipment too just for good luck.

The generator to our astonishment ran over 10 hours on just a gallon of petrol and over 20,000 visitors passed through the show. We had lots of  visitors to our stand and QSO’s from all over the world .

At the end of the day a fly-by from the red arrows really topped it off as the sun began to set.

Best of all, our good friend and SWL Tony Kafara had the chance to meet his all time hero from Coronation Street’s Sean Wilson aka Martin Platt who was selling cheese. Yes, we said CHEESE and bloody good stuff too!

Martin, don’t give up your day job. Whoops you did….. So what’s the story?

When TonyK asked Martin about packing in the acting, he simply replied, “Dude, we can’t be perfect all the time. I just  love cheese, it’s better than coming home from a hard days work at the hospital to David Platt, he’s a little  twat! I wash my hands of him”

TonyK and all at  SYRG agree… he’s a proper arse and needs a good clip round the lug hole coming from a stiff  Yorkshire hand. That will sort him. If not then he’ll get another one until he behaves ……

TonyK asked if Martin would be venturing into any other new lines with his cheese business before the next Penistone Show in September 2010.

Martin replied, ” Only if we find a good supply of velcro gloves “.

TonyK has promised Martin to source his request from contacts in the velcro business and will drop him a line in due course.

Over and out
