“Ham Radio ‘2011”, the Friedrichshafen Hamfest, is Europe’s largest gathering of radio hams. Why?, we could start with the setting – only a few miles from the Austrian and Swiss borders, on the shores of Lake Constance (known as the Bodensee, by the Germans). Surrounded by mountains and within easy reach of dozens of pretty little resorts.
What a flea market!
Take the flea market – a vast indoor flea market which is THE place to find those exclusive bits. Ex Nato Racal’s rub shoulders – for once – with Russian transmitters. Exotic gear from every corner of Europe – at prices which will surprise you. Haggling is friendly and fair.
Then there’s the food!
Take the food – when you eat at the Hamfest, you choose from one of the little food stalls outside the halls, or the restaurants inside. Whether you want a traditional German sausage, a burger or some of the more unusual Schwabian food of the region (delicious!). Traditionally washed down by a bottle of Bavarian beer, the prices are very reasonable to home.
The show itself
Take the show, now in the new Messa, where you will see the very best in amateur radio & computer gear. Not simply from German companies, like Rhode & Schwarz, but from a host of international business – Kenwood for instance are always there in force.
The built in Continental holiday
Don’t forget, visit the Hamfest and Friedrichshafen and you will also get a lakeside holiday thrown in, Both the Hamfest town of Friedrichshafen and neighbouring Lindau are elegant towns on the lake, with open air bars, restaurants and a host of historic squares and buildings.
A perfect blend to give you and your
Partner an early Summer treat.
