A CHARITY which has been supporting blind and partially-sighted residents in Sheffield for 150 years welcomed city MP David Blunkett to join in its birthday celebrations.
Sheffield Royal Society for the Blind organised a host of events to mark its milestone, including a visit by Hillsborough and Brightside MP David Blunkett who is himself registered blind.
He called in at the Mappin Street centre where he visited the radio studio to send out a greeting around the world with the help of Sheffield Amateur Radio Club.
He also did the honours by cutting a birthday cake which was shared around staff, clients and visitors.
Sue Coggin, fundraising manager at SRSB, said: “SRSB is proud to have served visually-impaired people in Sheffield for 150 years and would like to thank all the people of Sheffield for their support. We are entirely independent and self-funded so if it wasn’t for the support of the people of Sheffield we would not have been survived for so long.”
