Great Northern Hamfest – Barnsley Rally

The time is almost upon us for the Great Northern Hamfest !

This year sees the 21st anniversary for The Great Northern Hamfest which will take place on Sunday 18th September, 2011.

The location is Barnsley Metrodome. Postcode S71 1AN, or just follow the brown Metrodome/football ground signs from the Motorway.

There will be trade stalls, clubs and special interest groups, disabled facilities, catering facilities, a bar and restaurant.

Free parking. Doors open at 11:00 am.

There may still be some discounted tables for Amateurs wishing to have a ‘clear out’.

Kevin Cleary G4ATZ

It is with regret I have to report the untimely death of Kevin Cleary G4ATZ.

I have been contacted by his former wife, Susan, who said he had suffered a heart attack while on holiday in Argentina.

Kevin, who was 68 years old, had lived in Argentina (LU1ATZ) for a number of years, before returning to the UK and living in Haworth for the last 3 to 4 years. I understand from Susan that Kevin had remarried and was still working on a consultancy basis and enjoying travelling the world on his business.

Kevin will be remembered as the first Chairman of the Harrogate Repeater group when it was founded in 1981. At that time, Kevin was also the RSGB regional representative for the Harrogate and Wetherby areas. The custom in Argentina is to hold the funeral the following day after someone has died.

If I receive any information regarding a memorial service in the UK, I will circulate the appropriate details immediately.

Clearly all our thoughts are with his family at this sad time. If you have a database/list of other amateurs who knew Kevin, I would be grateful if you would forward this email on to them. Regrettably, I have no further information and will only be in contact again if called by a member of Kevin’s family.

Ham radio and D-Star to get boost from TV sitcom

The ABC Television series, “Last Man Standing” is about Mike Baxter (played by Tim Allen), a marketing executive for “Outdoor Man,” a fictitious sporting goods store in Colorado. Mike, is a “man’s man” and involved in all kinds of outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, boating. Likewise, Mike (and Tim) has a love for all the electronics that go with these activities. Among Mike’s interests is Amateur Radio (Ham Radio). Tim's character (Mike Baxter), is KA0XTT. This is a call sign the show cleared for use on air. "XTT" is a bit of a private joke as Tim's character name on "Home Improvement" was Tim Taylor. So, ex T. T. In the show’s radio inventory is currently an ICOM IC-9100 HF radio, an IC-92AD dual band, hand-held, a Heil PR-781microphone, a Daiwa CN-801HP SWR/Power meter a Comet CAA-500 antenna analyzer and a Iambic CW Paddle.
